Jamel Shabazz
I would like to draw the attention to one of the most exceptional photographers of our time Jamel Shabazz a mentor to the youth first, wealth in artistry, documenting not only the early days of HipHop culture in New York City but also urban life around the world while contributing to contemporary culture itself at large. His photographs mostly originated during the 1980s in NYC focusing on Black and Latino youth, the same people Shabazz was hanging out with back in the days. But also he encapsulated the times before crack spread like wildfire through the boroughs. A much sweeter time where peoples hearts weren't as hard as they are now and a time where you would get a smile from a stranger. The camera gave him a voice to approach people and educate them, make them feel good by taking a picture because they were special. Each picture tells a unique story, a second of his life and a chosen few are currently on display at the Bronx Museum until August 4th.
